In 1989, following Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa calling for Salman Rushdie's death, Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) stated in a TV interview that if Rushdie came to him, he wouldn't hide him, and appeared to endorse the fatwa. He later said comments were misrepresented or 'stupid jokes,' but Rushdie himself wrote in 2007 that Stevens 'was neither misunderstood nor misquoted.' Stevens was denied entry to the United States in 2004 due to his placement on a watchlist.
